Abstract
Purpose: To investigate whether temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is related to quality of life (QOL) in higher education professors in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Methods: The study assessed twenty-one professors of both sexes who answered an online form and could answer the SF-36 questionnaire and perform the DC/TMD. Chi-square, Student’s t, Mann-Whitney U, and Spearman tests were applied with a 5% significance level.
Results: The mean age of the teachers was 39.14 (SD = 8.05) years, with 15 women (71.42%). The study found that 57.14% of professors had a positive TMD diagnosis, and 66.66% had more than one diagnosis. Female professors had lower scores in the functional capacity domain. Professors over 45 years old had lower scores in social aspects, and those with TMD had lower scores in the general health and pain domains. The correlation between the SF-36 domains and the DC/TMD axis II questionnaires indicated that most professors presented symptoms related pain, anxiety, mental/emotional aspects, and physical changes.
Conclusion: The study showed an association between TMD and QOL in higher education professors during the COVID-19 pandemic, affecting their QOL. Female professors diagnosed with TMD had a greater impact on their QOL.
